Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) is the Federal Government's compassionate cash aid for families affected by disasters, including floods. It is paid through the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA). With the monsoon season getting closer, this guide explains the amount, the conditions and how to register so your payment is not delayed.

The MyIBJKM app is in Malay. The section names below are English translations of what you will see in the app.

How much BWI is and who pays it

According to NADMA Guideline No. 2 of 2025, there are two types of aid:

AidAmountRecipient
BWIRM1,000Head of household (KIR) affected by the disaster
BWI death assistanceRM10,000Next of kin of a victim who died because of the disaster

The guideline stresses that BWI is a token of sympathy, not compensation or damages for loss of property. Payment is made directly to the KIR through the paying bank appointed by the government.

This amount was still used for the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon. According to a NADMA media statement (27 Jan 2026), RM78.342 million had been paid to 78,342 KIR as of 21 Jan 2026. We have not found any official announcement changing the BWI rate for the 2026/2027 season.

BWI eligibility conditions

The NADMA guideline lists the following conditions:

  • the disaster is declared by a disaster management committee at federal, state or district level;
  • the applicant is a Malaysian citizen and the head of a household living in a private residence when the disaster happened;
  • the application is made through the MyIBJKM app, while the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) in that area is open, until it closes;
  • only one KIR per house, regardless of the number of household members, and only for one house;
  • the aid is given only once within a three-month period of being hit by the disaster.

Houses using the same address count as one unit. The exception is longhouses in Sabah and Sarawak, where each family room counts separately.

How to register for BWI through MyIBJKM

MyIBJKM is an app from the Department of Social Welfare (JKM). Official download links are on the JKM InfoBencana portal. The steps, according to the NADMA guideline:

  1. Register early. Download MyIBJKM from Google Play or the App Store and fill in your house details, household members and bank account. Make sure the house or lot number is correct.
  2. Go to the PPS. During a disaster, check the location of the nearest PPS in the app.
  3. Scan the PPS QR code. Tap the scan button and choose the family members who are with you. You can choose whether or not to stay overnight.
  4. Make the KIR declaration. Tick the declaration box confirming that you represent the household. Giving false information can lead to legal action.

The NADMA statement of 27 Jan 2026 adds a few important points. The QR code can only be scanned within 60 metres of the PPS. Applications are only processed if the BWI application section in the app is green. If you have a technical problem, ask the JKM staff at the PPS for help.

If you do not move to a PPS

The NADMA Director-General said aid is also given to victims who do not move to a PPS, as long as they register with JKM (Bernama report on the NADMA portal, 27 Nov 2025). For those who cannot get to a PPS in time, the District Officer can open a Victim Registration Centre (PPM).

At a PPM, you still use MyIBJKM, but you need to bring a police report, photos of the affected house, utility bills and copies of the identity cards of all household members. Registering at a PPS does not require any documents. Check with your sub-district chief or village head about the location and opening period of the PPM.

When and how BWI is paid

According to the NADMA statement of 27 Jan 2026, payment for the 2025/2026 Northeast Monsoon took an average of less than 14 working days for the first and second episodes, and an average of 3 to 7 working days after the PPS closed for later episodes. This is last season's record, not a promise for the coming season.

  • Successful applicants receive an SMS from BSN about how they will be paid.
  • The money is credited to the bank account registered in MyIBJKM.
  • If there is no bank account, or the details are wrong or incomplete, the money is claimed in cash at a BSN counter.
  • Applications with queries receive an SMS from NADMA asking the applicant to correct the details in the app, for example to use the same address as on the electricity or water bill.

Further questions about BWI can be made through the NADMA lines 03-8870 4852 or 03-8870 4813.

Disaster aid in Budget 2027

According to the Budget 2027 Speech (paragraph 124), tabled on 9 Oct 2026:

  • NADMA is allocated RM260 million.
  • The house repair aid rate for disaster victims is raised from RM5,000 to RM10,000.
  • 17 amphibious craft will be acquired for rescue operations by the Malaysia Civil Defence Force.

The effective date and conditions of the new house repair rate have not been announced. We will update this article when NADMA publishes them.

Beware of fake messages

According to NADMA, BWI applications are made in the MyIBJKM app by scanning the QR code at a PPS or PPM, and the result is notified by SMS from BSN or NADMA. So treat any message asking you to tap a link to "claim BWI", or asking for an OTP, TAC or online banking password, as a scam until verified.

Download MyIBJKM only through the link on the JKM portal. You can also check a suspicious message with the Fake Aid Message Checker.
