How we calculate it

  • Basket: 26 grocery items in weekly quantities for a family of four (father, mother, children aged 10–12 and 7–9). Items and quantities follow household spending in DOSM's HES 2024, sit below food availability in DOSM's SUA 2021–2025, and do not exceed the Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2020.
  • Prices: KPDN PriceCatcher, prices collected by KPDN officers at about 2,100 premises. Each premise's weekly price is the median of its daily observations from Sunday to Saturday.
  • Price changes are measured at the same premises and brands, against each premise's last price in the previous 4 weeks. New premises, or premises that stop reporting, do not distort the figures.
  • A state with fewer than 8 matched premises for an item uses the change in nearby states, then the region, then Malaysia. That cost does not count towards coverage.
  • The index is chained week by week, with the January 2026 average = 100. The Malaysia cost is the average of 16 states weighted by population (DOSM, 2026).
  • Incomplete weeks are marked Provisional, weeks without data are not shown, and unusual changes are held for human review before they appear.

“PriceCatcher data should be used as a complement rather than a replacement to CPI data.”

What the Kitchen Basket Index is

The weekly cost of 26 everyday grocery items for a family of four, computed every week from prices collected by KPDN at about 2,100 premises. The basket is a JelasKini example, not an official government basket and not the Poverty Line Income basket.

How to use this page

Look at the change, not only the level. Your own cost depends on your shop, brands and family size, but prices usually move the same way. Choose your state to see local costs; state RM levels are estimates, especially in states with few premises.

When it is updated

Every Sunday, after KPDN publishes Saturday prices on data.gov.my. Weeks run from Sunday to Saturday. Packaged goods such as rice, cooking oil and sugar are checked every Monday.

Kitchen Basket by state, 25–31 Oct 2026

Change vs the previous week. Sorted alphabetically, not by cost. State RM levels are estimates, so changes are more useful for comparison. Coverage is the share of the cost that comes from the state's own premises.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the inflation rate?
No. This is the cost of a 26-item grocery basket only, computed from KPDN PriceCatcher. The official inflation rate is DOSM's Consumer Price Index (CPI), which covers all household spending.
Why are my grocery costs different?
The basket uses prices at the premises KPDN monitors and average quantities for a family of four. Your actual cost depends on your shop, brands and family size.
How were the items and quantities chosen?
Based on what 4-person households spend in DOSM's Household Expenditure Survey (HES) 2024, below per-capita food availability in DOSM's SUA 2021–2025, and not above the Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2020.
Why are some weeks missing?
Weeks without enough KPDN data are not shown, for example 4–10 Oct 2026 (no data from 30 Sep to 9 Oct), or weeks whose Monday is a public holiday, because packaged goods are only checked on Mondays.
What do "Provisional" and "Limited data" mean?
Provisional: the week is incomplete, with fewer days of data or coverage below 85%. Limited data: part of that state's cost is estimated from nearby states because it has few premises.
